KAMYAKA-VANA
The Pandavas walked quite hurriedly away from Hastinapura. They wanted to go as far away from Hastinapura as possible. They came into a small copse. They sat down and rested for a while. They were very tired, hungry and thirsty. They drank cool water of Ganga, which was flowing nearby. They slept under trees without having food. When they woke up, some Brahmins came there. These brahmins wanted to accompany them to the forest and they wanted to stay with them for the entire period of twelve years of their stay in the forest. Yudhisthira was quite worried, while he was a king he used to take a lot of pleasure in feeding the Brahmins who came to his palace. Now in the forest, making an arrangement for their food could pose a big problem. But the brahmins were very adamant. They were not willing to go back.
Yudhisthira realised that as they would be living in the forest, other Rishi and Munis will come to them. Extending hospitality of serving them food was going to be difficult. He consulted his Kul-guru Dhaumya. Dhaumya advised him that he should pray to Lord Sun. Sun being the giver of all the food grains etc. to the earth was the lord of all the plants and food grains. Yudhisthira did penance for sometime. Lord Sun was pleased with him and knowing his problem gave him a vessel, which would never be empty. Unlimited food could be served from it by the person who was to cook it and till that person ate, any number of persons could be served. One problem of Yudhisthira was over.
The Pandavas reached Kamayaka forest. In the meantime, Dhritarastra in Hastinapura was also very disturbed and restless. He called Vidura, who once again advised him to call back the Pandavas and to give them back their entire kingdom etc. Dhritarastra was not willing to listen to his Sage advice. Vidura came to Kamyaka forest to meet the Pandavas. Pandavas received him with great warmth and respect. After seeing the Pandavas and knowing that they were well, Vidura went back to Hastinapura. Thereafter, Sage Vyasa came to Dhritarastra's court. At that time Duryodhana his brother and Karna were planning to attack the Pandavas in the forest. Coming of Vyasa to the court put this scheme on hold for a while. Vyasa warned Dhritarastra against all the ill treatments meted out to the Pandavas at his court. He said that destruction of his sons was inevitable. Along with them, the entire world would be doomed. Vyasa left Hastinapura.
After Vyasa, a great Sage Maitreya came to Dhritarastra. He was in the forest, where he saw the Pandavas. Being very hurt and feeling sad, He too, tried to make Duryodhana and Dhritarastra see reason. But Duryodhana was very insolent and impudent to him. He did not listen to the rishi, Maitreya became very angry and he said that the death of Duryodhana was certain. Bhima will break his thighs and he will die. Dhritarastra became very nervous and uneasy. He prayed to Maitreya but the angry rishi could not be assuaged by his empty words lacking in substance and sincerely.
OATH OF KRISHNA
Krishna was very eager to see the Pandavas. He came to Kamayaka forest to meet them. Draupadi's brother Dhristadyumna, some warriors of Vrishi clam and the king Cheedi was also with him. They all were very sad and unhappy to see the Pandavas and Draupadi in such a pitiable state. Draupadi became very emotional to see her brother and Krishna. She could not control herself. She wept bitterly and told her story to them. She told them about her great humiliation at the court of Kaurvas and the attempt of Dussashan to disrobe her. Krishna wiped the tears of Draupadi and said, "For these sin all brothers of Duryodhana, all those who were in the court and did not speak shall have to pay with their lives." Krishna told Yudhisthira that the time would come soon when Yudhisthira would be a king again. Words of Krishna gave great comfort to the Pandavas and Draupadi. After spending sometime with them, Krishna and all others came back.
DAVAITVANA
Yudhisthira consulted his brothers after the departure of Krishna. He felt that they should go in deep forest to complete their term of stay in forest. Arjuna came up with a suggestion that Davaitvana could be such a forest. He had seen it during his pilgrimage. All of them agreed to it and they started for Davaitvana. This forest turned out to be a very pleasant place. It was having large green tree and a river nearby. A lot of rishis had their ashrams here and a lot of munis were engaged in various tapas. Atmosphere was always echoing with the chanting of the sacred Veda mantras. Rishis and Munis also were very happy to see the Pandavas there. The Pandavas erected a cottage for themselves. Whenever any rishi paid a visit to their cottage, he was received with a great honour and all hospitalities were offered to him.
Once the great Sage Markandeya came to visit them. Markandeya always had the look of sixteen-year-old. He had obtained a boon. Markendeya was quite happy to meet the Pandavas with his happy look.Yudhisthira asked, "O great Sage, all the world is so very sad, but I find a look of great contentment and happiness about you. What is the reason." The Sage replied, "Seeing you all, along with your wife in the dress of rishi, I am reminded of Lord Rama, who in the Tretayuga, had to spent fourteen years in the forest along with his brother Lakshamana and his wife Sita." The Sage said further, "I was fortunate to see the Lord Rama. I now see you in the same dress." This was the reason of sages' happy look. Markandeya, gave his blessings to the Pandavas and then he left. Draupadi, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahdeva were impatient with the present state of affairs. They wanted to attack the Kauravas immediately. They were not willing to wait for thirteen years.
At this juncture, the Pandavas were pleased to find Sage Vyasa among them. Vyasa heard all the talks of Yudhisthira and his brother. Vyasa praised the sense of dharma of Yudhisthira and his patience. Vyasa said Kauravas were now stronger than ever Bhoomishrava was with them. Many other kings were with them. Three disciples of Bhagvana Parashurama were with the Kauravas, Bhishma, Dronacharya and Karna made a very formidable opposition. Vyasa advised the Pandavas to use their period of exile to strengthen their position and to prepare for the war, which was to take place after their exile was over. He reminded Arjuna of the Indra's promise to him, when at the time of the burning of the Khandava vana, he had promised to give all the divine astras. Vyasa said that now Arjuna should please Lord Shiva and obtain the Pashupata astra from him. After that Indra will give him other divine astras. Such astras will be very important to win the war. Everyone liked sage Vyasa's advice. Thereafter Vyasa blessed the Pandavas and left.
