SAGE SUTEEKSHNA

After completing his education from his teacher Agastya, Suteekshna requested him to demand something as his Gurudakshina (fees). The sage said that the dedication with which Suteekshna had served him was the greatest Gurudakshina and he was very much satisfied by it. But when Suteekshna insisted again and again, then the sage Agastya asked him to help him to realize the Almighty God as his Gurudakshina. Suteekshna accepted this. He constructed his own hermitage in the Dandakaranya (forest) situated in the northern direction from the hermitage of Agastya.

Suteekshna had heard from his teacher that Lord Vishnu would take incarnation as Lord Rama in Ayodhya and would pass through Dandakaranya while on his way to kill the demon Ravana. So, he waited for that moment engaging him in penance and singing hymns in his praise till the arrival of the Lord Rama.

When Lord Rama by the order of his father Dashrath went into exile and passed by the hermitage of sage 'Sharabhanga', Suteekshna got this news. He ran towards that direction from which Lord Rama was coming. His heart was filled with joy. While running, he was thinking- ' O Deenabandhu, I need your blessings. Give me an opportunity to have the divine sight of yours along with mother Sita and Lakshman. Though, I don't believe that I would be able to see your divine sight, but still my heart yearns for it so do help me in having your perception and my life would become worthwhile by my hands touching your holy feet."

Sage Suteekshna became so emotional that he forgot about his own identity where he was, what he was doing and where he was going. The abundance of joy made him act like a mad person. He went a few steps further and then returned back. Sometimes, he called Shri Rama by his different names that is Raghunath, Kaushalyanandan and danced with joy.

Lord Rama along with Janaki and Lakshman were watching all his activities hiding behind a tree. While dancing Suteekshna had a divine glimpse of Shri Rama in his heart. This made him so blissful that he sat down then and there and started meditating on his divine sight.

Lord Rama came out from behind the tree and called out to Suteekshna, but he was in no mood to listen as he was blissfully drinking the nectar of Shri Rama's divine sight in the state of his meditation. Suteekshna who was blissfully meditating on the divine appearance of Shri Rama in his heart and was not even listening to Shri Rama's call suddenly found that the divine sight had vanished and in its place he was seeing the sight of Lord Vishnu with all his four Hands. Suteekshna became restless and opened his eyes. When he found Shri Rama along with Sita and Lakshman, he bent down to touch Shri Rama's feet. Shri Rama lifted him up and embraced him.

Sage Suteekshna took Shri Rama, Sita and Lakshman to his hermitage. He did his worship and made salutations to Shri Rama. He offered him fruits, Kand and mool (roots).

After staying for a while, when Shri Rama expressed his desire to take leave, to go to sage Agastya's hermitage, Suteekshna too wanted to go along with him and sought his permission. Shri Rama understood the reason and he smilingly gave him the permission.

When all of them reached the hermitage of the sage, Suteekshna after making salutations said: " The same Shri Rama has arrived with Sita and Lakshman for whose realization you constantly endeavour."

Such was Sage Suteekshna who had brought Shri Rama at the door of his Guru as Gurudakshina.
