Rituals for Naming

When a baby is born in a Sikh family, no elaborate rituals are performed. After ten days , both mother and baby are taken to the Guruduara . There, they are made to bow before Guru Granth Sahib. Then, offerings are made and Vak (a stanza in a sentence) is opened in Guru Granth Sahib . The baby is named with the first letter of the Vak (Stanza) opened spontaneously. If the baby is a boy, 'Singh' is attached to his name, if the baby is a girl, her name is followed by the word 'Kaur'. The baby is again made to bow before Guru Granth Sahib. Parents then offer donations to Guruduara as per their faith. Donation of 'Karhah Prasad' (food to be cooked for community feast) and if possible, of 'Rumaley' (loin cloth) to Guru Sahib is must.
