Women have been accorded a high position in Sikhism . Sikh women can perform all the tasks that have been religiously prescribed for men. Sikh women can go to the Gurudwara, can recite and worship God; and like men, can even hold the Amrit . Guru Nanak Dev says is this regard:
SO KIU MAN DA AKHIYE
JIT JAMANH RAJAN.
Meaning: "How can she be unholy or less in any virtue, who gives birth to this world, who gives birth to all of us, who looks after us and who helps us at every step as mother, sister, daughter and wife".
Killing of girls or female foeticide is regarded as highly wretched tasks in Sikhism . Even the widows are not compelled in Sikhism to lead a life of deprivation.
One of the meanings of Sikh is the learner, i.e. the one who keeps learning every moment in his/her life. Sikhism, therefore, emphasises on spiritual discourses also besides social discourses . As the social discourses are necessary to mend the physical ambience, spiritual discourses mend that divine ambience which is our home in the true sense. A human being's presence in this world is temporary. His real home is far above. Thus, the spiritual discourses improve the present and the future homes of a human being.
