SHESH NAG
Out of God's five different appearances (Panchavidh Swarupas), one of them is Vyuha. This Vyuha appearance is taken to maintain the creation, destruction of evil, for the welfare of the people and bestow grace on the devotees. This Vyuha has four types- Vasudeva, Sankarshana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha. Of them, only the three i.e. Sankarshana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha are the real Vyuhas. Vasudeva is only an appearance of Vyuha. Sankarshana is the ruler of life. Two virtues- knowledge and force are main in Him. He stays in Patal as Shesha. It is from his mouth that eternal fire emanates which incinerates everything during Pralaya (calamity). It is Shesha that stays as Lord Narayana in Kshirsagar. From His thousand mouths, He keeps on reciting God's name. He is the supreme assistant of God and takes the creatures to the shelter of God. Even the gods pray to Him. No one can describe His power, prowess, effect and appearance. Gandharvas, Kinnars, Apsaras, Sidhas, Nagas etc., no one can measure His virtues. Hence, He is also called as Ananta (endless).
Panchavidhas are also regarded as the proponent of Jyotish Siddhanta. Bearing the appearance of God, who runs the world, these Panchavidhas are great and venerable in the entire world. Shesha also supports the universe on His head. He is known as Shesha because He takes the form of God's abode, bed, seat, footwear, costumes, cushion and the canopy. He took incarnation as Lakshmana in Treta Yuga and as Balarama in Dwapar Yuga and became an essential part in God's various deeds. He is regarded as the continuous server to God and full of knowledge.
