SALIENT FEATURES

The salient features of Buddhism are -

  1. It is a religion that gives paramount importance to the sacrifice of the self and it has been empirically proved.

  2. It is a religion possessing historical significance. It is not a chain of imaginary fables, fiction or pulp literature.

  3. It is knowledge based i.e. it is important that the ideal person of this religion or 'Arhat' is knowledgeable and is not plagued by blind faith.

  4. It is logical - This religion offers enough scope for intellectual discussion.

  5. In this religion, nothing is impossible for Buddhists. The Sadhak is himself the master of his body, mind and fate.

  6. The religion does not discriminate on the basis of colour, sex, caste, creed, race etc. It believes that at birth, all humans are one and alike.

  7. It does not consider any concept of incarnation, prophets, Vedas, God or supreme cosmic soul etc.

  8. The Sadhak of this religion can attain Bodhi (Supreme knowledge) on basis of purity of mind, good conduct and sincerity. That is why, it is said -

|| BUDDHAYAYAYA NIVARTATE SAHA BAUDHAHA ||

These are in the few salient features of Buddhism which are so unique in itself. Therefore, scholars devoid of favoritism but rational in approach should consider and study this religion in profoundity.

The reason behind the uprooting of Buddhism in its place of origin is worth knowing.
