RAJSUYA

The Rajasuya came as a great excitement to the citizens of Indraprastha. The supervision of the Yagya was given to Sage Vyasa. Four Pandava brothers were assigned the task of conquering the four directions. East was assigned to Bhima, Arjuna chose North, Nakula was to proceed to the West and Sahdeva to south. Arjuna started his victory campaign uninterrupted. He became famous as Vijaya. He met and subdued Salva. Bhagadatta, Trigarta brothers, etc. Arjuna went till the mountain Meru. Arjuna returned successful with innumerable valuable gifts from the friends and foes alike. He was also called Dhananjaya - the winner of great wealth. Bhima marched towards east. He went to Panchala, Mithila, Chedi, where he met Sishupal. Shishupal received him with great affection and honour and was very happy to know about the Rajasuya Yagya. Bhima also visited Koshal, Ayodhya and Magadha.

Sahdeva met with similar success. Finally he reached Lanka where the righteous king Vibhishan was still the ruler, son of Sage Pulastya and younger brother of Ravana, Vibhishana received Ghatotkacha with great love and affection, who was send there by Sahdeva as his emissary. Vibhishana also accepted the invitation to the Rajasuya with great pleasure. In city of Chitrasena, Sahdeva was shown great affection by Chitrangada, wife of Arjuna and he met his nephew Babhruvahana, the son of Arjuna. Nakula went to west to invite all Vrishnis to Krishna clan. In Dwarka, Vasudeva, Balaram and Krishna showered much love and affection on Nakula and readily accepted the invitation to the Rajasuya Yagya.

Krishna came to attend the Rajasuya with innumerable gifts. So many kings reached Indraprastha that there was a large crowd of kings only. They all were received with due honour and were housed in many palaces befitting their ranks. Duryodhana and his brothers, Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, karna etc. all Kauravas were their in full strength. Krishna made Duryodhana the treasurer to keep all the gifts received from the kings. Duryodhana turned green with envy to see the vast treasure given to the Pandavas as gifts. The Rajasuya was a grand success. Everyone was overjoyed it was thousands of year that some one gets the honour to perform such a great sacrifice. All showered there blessings on Yudhisthira and the Pandavas and they also were embodiments of humanity and hospitality in turn.

KRISHNA: THE CHIEF GUEST

After the completion of the yagya, it was the duty of the king Yudhisthira to honour all the kings and great sages who had come to attend the Yagasuya from all corners of the earth. It was customary that the king washed feet of all the honoured guests and sages and worship them with 'Arghya' One among the guest, had to be chosen as the chief guest and he had to be so honoured at first. In such an assembly the question became extremely tricky and delicate. Whom to chose as the chief guest? Sages like Vyasa was there, Elders like Bhishma was there, Gurus like Drona, Kripa and Dhaumya was there. Yudhisthira thought it prudent to leave the choice in Bhishma's hands. Apart from being the eldest among the Kurus, he was the embodiment of dharma and shastras. Bhishma did not have to think for a moment even. He announced in his voice resounding with reverence, that no one could be even thought of for the honour, when Krishna, the lord of all creation was present. The wise and learned sages and kings had absolutely no doubt on that point. However, the ignorant and the frivolous were heard caviling at the decision. Krishna was neither a sage, nor the eldest, nor the relative, nor the guru of the Pandavas. They did not know the Krishna at all.

One such deluded king Sishupal, who was Krishna's cousin, became very aggressive and he hurled many unkind words and abusive words on Krishna, when Bhishma tried to pacify him, even the venerable Kuru elder, became the target of the most vile insults from him. He went to the extent of calling Bhishma an eunuch, son of a river who embraces one and all etc. Bhishma kept his cool to everyone's amazement. Bhishma was not to let any insult pass. Then Krishna asked Sishupal to stop and he did not. In a moment Sudarshana Chakra was seen in Krishna's finger and the other moment saw the severed heard of Sishupal. But all assembled saw a strange sight. A beam of light emerged from the severed, headless body of Sishupal and it went into Krishna's feet.

Bhishma explained that Sishupal was a divine personage, serving as the personal attendant to lord Vishnu. He was born as Hiranayakashyapa in the first life, then as Ravana and in the present life as Sishupal. Now killed by the blessed hands of Lord Krishna he had obtained his release from the curse and went back to Vaikuntha, the abode of Lord Vishnu to serve him. This release was possible only through Krishna's hands, that was the reason for Bhishma's indulgence towards him.
