PANCHA MAHAYAGYA: FIVE ACTIONS FOR A MAN WORTH DOING
- DEVOTION TOWARDS PARENTS
- DEVOTION AND FAITHFULNESS TOWARDS THE HUSBAND
- EQUALITY
- RIGHT CONDUCT AND CHARACTER
- ADORATION OF LORD VISHNU AND SINGING HYMNS IN HIS PRAISES
The above-mentioned 5 Mahayagyas have great importance. If even one of them is adopted and practiced by a man in his life, then it is certain that he will achieve name, fame, wealth and even liberation. Hence, one should try to accomplish these yagyas only then one would achieve the real enjoyment from life.
1) DEVOTION AND SERVICE TOWARDS THE PARENTS: - The virtuosity which is impossible to achieve even after the performance of hundreds of yagyas, charities, penance and pilgrimage becomes possible by having devotion towards the parents due to the fact that on this earth the father is the deity and the mother is greater than all the pilgrimages combined. So just by doing our duties towards our parents, every deity is pleased and we get the benefit of having a bath in the river Ganges. One who does a Pradakshina ( walking around a revered person or temple etc.) of his parents, the virtues which is attained is greater than the Pradakshina of the whole earth.
A son who abandons his parents who are either diseased and old or without any means of earning livelihood is sure to go to hell. No matter how much virtuous, charitable he is but he is not accepted even by God. Such a man gets birth in a low caste family in his next life. A son who does not look after his parents destroys all of his any virtues if at all he possesses. A place where a son respects parents, a place where a son performs all his duties towards his parents the almighty god is pleased and likes to dwell in such a place.
There is a nice story describing about the dwelling of God Almighty in such places where parents are respected by their son, where a wife maintains faithfulness and chastity towards her husband and has total devotion towards him, where lust, greed does not affect a person and he maintains his balance and poise in all situations, where there is no enmity and where devotional songs and hymns are sung in the praise of Lord Vishnu.
The story goes as follows. There was a very religious Brahmin by the name of Narottama. After disrespecting his parents, he started off for a pilgrimage. He had achieved such powers by his penance and religious practices that after having his bath he used to dry up his wet clothes by hanging them without any support in the sky. The possession of this power had made that Brahmin proud and arrogant. One day a heron, flying in the sky passed dung on his head, the Brahmin after becoming angry gave a curse to the heron. As a result of that curse, the heron was charred to death.
Seeing the power of his curse, Narottama became even prouder and arrogant. But the sin which he had committed by killing a harmless and innocent bird had taken away his ability to hang his clothes without any support. Realizing this his heart was filled with grief. Then a voice came from the sky : " O Brahmin, If you go to the place where the Mook Chandala lives, you will come to understand the essence of religion and this will be good for your welfare."
After hearing this, Narottama went to the Mook Chandala's place. He saw that Mook Chandala was busy doing service to his parents by doing various kind of activities like helping then bathe in warm water, massaging them with oil, pressing their legs and cooking tasty dishes for them etc.
Mooka Chandala had his food only after his parents had eaten. These were his daily routines. By performing his duties towards his parents, Mooka Chandala had acquired such powers that his house was in a hanging position in the sky without any support. Lord Hari the master of all the 3 worlds reside in such places too.
Narottama was amazed to see all these things. He requested Mooka Chandala to inform him about the most beneficial knowledge of the world.
But Mooka Chandala expressed his inability, as he was busy in doing service to his parents. He also requested him to wait until he finished his duties, after the completion of which, he would be at the service of his honoured guest. Narottama became angry after hearing this. Then, Mooka Chandala said to him that it was useless to become angry, as he was not like that heron, upon which his anger would not have any effect. He also said to Narottama that he was aware that he had lost the power of drying up his clothes in the sky without any support and when he said that he also knows the reason as to why he came here after hearing the unseen voice from the sky.
So, he requested Narottama to wait if he wanted the answer to his question or else he could go the faithful woman, where he could certainly get the answer from her. Right then, Lord Hari disguised as a Brahmin came out form the Chandala's home and said: " Come with me, I will take you to the house of that faithful woman."
Narottama being surprised at seeing a Brahmin coming out from a Chandala's house asked him: " How come you live in the house of such a lowly man who belongs to the most mean caste."
Lord Hari said: " Dear Brahmin, right now your state of mind is impure and hence, you will not be able to understand. You will understand everything after you meet the chaste and faithful wife."
And then, they proceeded forward to meet the chaste and faithful woman.
This story which is still incomplete clearly illustrates the virtues one gets by performing one's duties towards his parents and also what powers one can achieve by that. Lord Hari dwells in such homes is also clearly stated.
BENEFITS OF FAITHFULNESS TOWARDS THE HUSBAND
Narottama being curious to know about the chaste and faithful wife asked Shri Hari in disguise as a Brahmin: " O supreme Brahmin, who is this chaste and faithful wife? How vast and profound is her knowledge of the scriptures? And what is the reason, I am going there?"
Then, Shri Hari replied in detail about the virtues and greatness of a chaste and faithful wife like this- " O, Brahmin, just as the river Ganges is considered as the holiest of all the rivers, Himalaya as the supreme among all the mountains, just as the rose is considered as the supreme among flowers and just as Lord Vishnu holds the supreme position amongst all deities and Gods, in the same way a chaste and faithful wife holds the supreme position among all the women."
" A wife who daily looks after the welfare of her husband, not only she liberates her father's race and the race to which her husband belongs, but also help in liberating hundreds of generations."
After saying these words, Shri Hari mentions about the qualities, which a chaste and faithful wife is supposed to possess like 1) A wife, who serves her husband a hundred times more than the desire which she has for her son's requirement is a chaste and faithful woman.
2) A wife who is fearful of her husband as one is fearful of the king and who considers her husband as the 'Lord'.
3) A wife who gives her all in the service of her husband.
4) A wife who is as efficient as a maidservant in doing household works, as efficient as a mother while feeding her husband.
5) A wife who serves her husband by her whole thoughts, words and deeds who never disobeys her husband and has her food only after her husband has eaten.
6) A wife who considers all men, other than her own husband as her brother, father or son.
Then, Shri Hari asked him to go to that chaste and faithful woman whose name was Shubha and who was not only beautiful but was also kind and famous and ask her the questions for your welfare.
After saying this, Shri Hari vanished. Narottama not finding Shri Hari by his side was amazed. Anyhow, he reached at his destination and first of all he enquired about Shri Hari who was in the disguise of a Brahmin.
Seeing a guest at her door, the chaste and faithful wife came out running towards him. Narottama requested her to tell those things herself, which would be beneficial for his welfare.
Hearing this, the chaste and faithful wife expressed her inability as she was busy in the service of her husband. She requested him to wait until she finished her duties towards her husband. After hearing this, Narottama told her that he is neither hungry nor thirsty and nor he was tired. He had come to have the answer for his question. He also threatened to curse her if she did not reply to his questions immediately.
At this, the chaste and faithful woman said that she was not that heron whom he could char to death, his curse will not have any effect on her as she was faithfully doing her duties towards her husband.
She asked him to go to Dharma Tuladhara to ask his questions. After saying this, the chaste and faithful woman went inside her house.
Narottama's eyes followed her inside the room and he was surprised to see the same Brahmin (Shri Hari) inside her house, sitting happily with the woman. He went inside the room after the chaste woman had left and asked Shri Hari: " O superior being, please tell me, how did the Mooka Chandala and the chaste woman come to know about the heron incident.
At this, Shri Hari told him that virtuous and religious people by their power of virtuousness and right conduct come to know about every happening and then he enquired from him about the faithful woman as to what did she reply to his question.
Narottama told him the whole story and also that she had advised him to go to Dharma Tuladhara Vaisya. Then, Shri Hari who was disguised as a Brahmin asked him to come along with him. Both of them proceeded towards Dharma Tuladhara's place. Hence, the second part of the story is complete. It becomes quite clear that the Almighty God dwells in such places where a chaste and faithful woman (wife) lives and this chastity and powerfulness gives great power to her.
7) EQUANIMITY- Narottama unable to suppress his curiosity asked Shri Hari whom was in the disguise of a Brahmin as to where Brahma Tuladhara lived?
Shri Hari replied: " Brahma Tuladhara lives amidst crowd, where many things of various kinds are being sold. He has never harmed anybody by his thoughts, words and deeds. He has never spoken any lie, he is always doing work for the welfare of the people. Due to these qualities, people have absolute faith in him and do business on his name. Due to these qualities, he has been named Dharma Tuladhara."
After saying this, Shri Hari vanished. Narottama reached the market place where Dharma Tuladhara was busy dealing with the different people.
Dharma Tuladhara after seeing a Brahmin before him asked humbly about the reason for his coming. Narottama replied that he wanted to learn about the essence of religion and hence he had come to listen to what he had to say to that.
Dharma Tuladhara said that till, I am dealing with the people, I will not be able to tell you anything but if you have belief in me then go to that religious man and you will know the reasons behind the death of the heron, the reason of drying up your wet clothes hung up in the sky without any support. The name of that religious man is Adrohaka, he is a very gentleman. His preaching on religion will satisfy all of your desires."
Then, Shri Hari materialized again form nowhere to take him to Adrohaka. On the way, Adrohaka asked him: " O superior being, Dharma Tuladhara does 'Tarpana' ( a religious rite to which libation of water is made to the deceased ancestors) to neither the Deities, sages nor to the deceased ancestors, then how come he knew about the incidents to which only I was the witness."
Shri Hari replied that the Deities, the deceased ancestor and the revered sages are all satisfied by the person who has equanimity towards every living being and who is truthful. Dharma Tuladhara had these qualities in abundance and hence he has the knowledge about the past and the future. There is no greater religion in this world than Truth and there is no greater sin greater than falsehood. A man who is free from sins and possesses equanimity, whose behaviour is equal and the same towards his enemies, friends, rich and wealthy, poor and evil gets all his sins destroyed. In the heart of such a person, Lord Vishnu dwells. Being a possessor of all these qualities, Dharma Tuladhara was able to know about the past incidents to which he was not even a witness.
Narottama, The Brahmin was satisfied by the answer but at the same time curious to know about Adrohaka and requested Shri Hari to tell about him. Shri Hari told the following story.
8) RIGHT CONDUCT AND CHARACTER: -Shri Hari said: " O dear Brahmin, long time ago, a Kshatriya prince had a very beautiful and young princess. Even her name was Sundari. The prince loved her more than his own life. Once he had to go out of town regarding the work of his state. Fearful of leaving his princess alone, he thought of keeping her at Adrohaka's place. He knew a lot about Adrohaka's good conduct and character. So, he thought that the princess would be safe there.
After listening to him, Adrohaka said how could you remain at peace by leaving such a beautiful woman with me? And moreover I am not even your relative, so how can you have so much trust on me?
The prince replied: " I have full faith and trust in you, so it is up to you ho to look after her to protect her chastity, Now I must make a move?
Adrohaka was in great dilemma and replied to the prince: " To protect the chastity of your wife, I will have to behave very rudely with her as I feel that is the only way to protect her chastity. But if you have some other solution in your mind, then tell me."
After thinking for a while, the prince said, do as you think appropriate and then turning towards his wife, he said: " O Sundari, do as he says, no blame would be put on you. This is my command." After saying this, the prince left.
In the night, Adrohaka did as he had said. He and Sundari slept on the same bed. Nevertheless, since Adrohaka was a man of high character, his emotions and desires were not aroused even after sleeping with a woman on the same bed. While sleeping, it happened many times that Sundari by mistake touched Adrohaka but still he kept himself under control.
The prince came back after six months to take back the princess. But this event of keeping the princess in a stranger's house had spread like a fire and people had started to talk rubbish things like the prince's action of keeping the princess with Adrohaka was not justified. How can a man control his desires when he sleeps with a woman on the same bed?
Adrohaka came to know about all these things by the power of his virtue and religiousness. He became so sad that he wanted to take his life by burning his body on the pyre. So, he collected some woods required for the pyre and ignited it. The pyre started burning and while he was standing in front of the burning pyre with a sad face, just then, the prince arrived. He asked: " O friend, I have returned after such a long time but still you are not talking to me, what is the reason?
Adrohaka replied: " Friend, the rudeness with which I behaved with the princess to save her chastity ha been made useless by the accusation and condemnation of the people. I am innocent, so to prove my innocence, I will burn myself to death. All the deities and the people would be witness of my action."
After saying these words, Adrohaka jumped into the pyre but the virtuous and religiousness of Adrohaka was so powerful that he was unharmed by the pyre.
All the deities showered flowers from the sky. The people who had raised accusing finger on him felt ashamed and then the deities told the prince to take back his wife. They also said that: " There is no other man in this world who has complete control over lust and greed like Adrohaka. It is impossible for the deities, demons, men and all the other creatures to become like him. The reason why a man is trapped in the cycle of birth and death is due to his lust, greed and anger. Adrohaka by controlling his lusts has conquered all the 3 worlds. Lord Vishnu dwells in the heart of such a man.
In this third part of the story, it has been explained about the powers, which can be acquired by having full control over our senses, and Lord Vishnu dwells in the heart of such a person.
Narottama after meeting Adrohaka asked the same question to preach him on religiousness. But Adrohaka expressed about his inability and requested him to go to the great devotee of Vishnu and he will be satisfied by his preaching.
6) ADORATION OF LORD VISHNU : - After this, Narottama along with Lord Vishnu who was disguised as a Brahmin came to the devotee of Lord Vishnu and he saw a radiant man with a pure heart and it appeared that he was the possessor of all the qualities. Narottama asked him the same question: " O great man, I have come from very far away, please preach me on religion." The devotee of Lord Vishnu replied: " O superior Brahmin, you have Lord Vishnu's blessings. I too am pleased to see you, as here, in my home Lord Vishnu himself is present. So all your desires will be fulfilled and you would be benefited extremely."
Narottama was amazed to learn about Lord Vishnu's presence as he was unaware about the Brahmin who was Lord Vishnu himself. So, he requested to help him to see Lord Vishnu as soon as possible. Then, the devotee of Lord Vishnu asked him to go to the temple to get his wish fulfilled. When Narottama reached the temple, he was highly amazed to see the same Brahmin who had been his companion, all along his way in search of religiousness. After bowing his head and having made salutations, he expressed his misfortune and inability in knowing his real identity and requested Lord Vishnu to show his divine appearance. Then, Lord Vishnu said: " My blessings were with you all the time because if it had not been so, I would not have taken you to all those great and virtuous people you met. The man achieves liberation by the mere touch of these pious souls and ultimately gets united with my form." " One who worships Shiva after having his bath in the holy Ganges, gets united with me too. The date of Ekadashi ( eleventh day) which is my own day and one who worships me on this day gets united with me too."
" One who sings devotional songs in my praise, one who listens to my divine stories by remaining awake at night, one who has complete devotion towards his parents and teachers and one who is truthful, gets united with me after the death of his mortal body."
" Since you are my devotee and to neutralize the sin you had committed by killing that heron, it was only me who had sent you to the Chandala, to the faithful woman, to Adrohaka and at last to my own devotee who were all virtuous and religious people, where you saw with your own eyes, hoe dedicated were they towards their respective duties. You got this opportunity to have a divine sight of me only due to them. Only those people who are the most fortunate can see my divine self. Ask for any boon and it will be fulfilled."
But Narottama after attaining enlightenment after having the glimpse of Lord Vishnu's divine self said: " O Lord, my only wish is that my mind and soul remain engaged in you and your name. There is not any other thing which I aspire for."
Then Lord Vishnu said: " O dear Brahmin, since you are so intelligent therefore you have such supreme thoughts coming into your mind, so I bless you with all the divine wealth of this world and the ultimate unification with my self. But you have not fulfilled the duties towards your parents, because of which they are very displeased and angry with you. By performing your duties towards your parents, you will have the right to be ultimately united with me. Because of your parent's anger towards you and because of the result of their curse, your powers are getting diminished day by day. One , whose parents are always angry cannot be saved from going to hell even by my powers, Brahma or even by Shiva. So, go and serve your parents with full devotion and dedication and you will attain me by their blessings."
This story clearly states about the virtues of all the above mentioned five Mahayagyas or duties which ought to be performed by each man.
