On the seventh day of the war Bhishma made Mandala Vyuha. It was circular formation very difficult to penetrate. The Pandavas countered it by Vajra Vyuha. Drona attacked Virata and Draupada. His son Ashvatthama went after Shikandi. Duryodhana was facing Dhristadhyumna. Nakula and Sahdeva were fighting with their uncle Salya. Vinda and Anuvinda engaged Arjuna. A large number of soldiers again met their deaths at the hands of Bhishma.
Arjuna was going for him but was checked by the Trigarta's Their King Susarma, came to fight with Arjuna. But Bhishma chose to attack Arjuna and he came upon him. A very terrible fight took place. Neither of them was ready to withdraw. Bhishma was surrounded by the Trigartas and from the rear he was protected by Duryodhana.
Drona and Virata met Sankha, the son of Virata was killed by Drona. Shikandi fought a terrible fight with Ashvatthama. Shikandi inflicted many wounds on his opponent. A big event was the fight between Ghatotkacha and Bhagadatta in which Bhaggadatta proved his mettle and forced, Ghatotkacha to leave the field. Yudhisthira too was in terrific form. Seeing him in this role everyone was quite surprised. It was a rare sight to see an enraged Yudhisthira chasing his enemies. He chased away Shutayu. Abhimanyu again proved his skills. He single handedly tackled several brothers of Duryodhana. Even Bhishma faced him and admired his prowess. Bhishma today had a tough fight with Yudhisthira.
Various attempts of Shikandi to get at Bhishma were repeatedly thwarted by alert Kauravas. Whenever Shikandi reached Bhishma he turned his face away to fight someone else. He thought of Shikandi as Amba. Amba was trying to free Bhishma from the self-imposed curse of eternal bachelorhood. That was only possible when Bhishma could be freed from his body. Amba wanted to make him free but Bhishma continued to ignore her. Amba was even more determined, " I will kill him tomorrow", she thought.
