THE WRATH OF DURYODHANA

After listening to all the talks Duryodhana address Krishna, "O Krishna, you are telling me so much. You seem to think that all the blame in on my shoulders. Bhishma, Drona, Vidura and even my father think that I am guilty. I do not see what is my sin." What have I done? Yudhisthira played dice and staked his kingdom of his own free will. How can I be blamed for this? I even returned his kingdom once, but he played again and lost it. Now, the Pandavas, are unjustly trying to find some excuse to declare a war upon me, as they have managed to gather a huge army in their support. I am a Kshatriya. It is my first dharma to fight for a just cause I shall do it. I am prepared to face the war. Despite all this, neither the Pandavas nor anyone else is capable of defeating me in a war. But even if I lose and die in the battlefield, I shall get eternal fame and will go to heaven rightly. I am not afraid of death.

Duryodhan refusing the proposal My father without any justification gave Indraprastha to the Pandavas. I shall not give them to speak of the kingdom, let alone five villages, even the pieces of land of the size of the point of a needle to the Pandavas. I have to tell you once and for all."

Krishna could only laugh at Duryodhana's evil mindedness. He was full of compassion for him. He said "O Duryodhana, you want death in the battlefield very keenly, your wish shall be fulfilled very soon. All those who are on your side shall also get the same honour. You have the temerity to state in presence of these noble people, that you have done nothing blame worthy. Let this wisemen decide whether you are guilty or not. You, envious of the Pandavas riches, deceitfully invited them to gamble. On the advice of Shakuni.

You asked your father to invite Yudhishthira for gambling, you and Shakuni threw the dices dishonestly. Your behaviour with Draupadi, the queen of the Pandavas, insults heaped upon her, the dragging of her to the court, the attempt to disrobe her, and the insulting and harsh words said to her alone are sufficient for the death of your brothers and you. The noble souls who did not speak at that time equally deserve death.

The words of Dussasana and Karna cannot be forgotten in a hurry. You had conspired to kill the Pandavas and their mother Kunti in Lakshagraha. They survived that is another story. But your this cowardly attempt is known to the people. You also tried to poison Bhima. And even after their acts, you dare say that you have done nothing wrong? I can only have pity upon you."

Then Dussasana said, "Duryodhana it seems that all our elders have decided to hand us over to the Pandavas, our feet and hands tied. Grandsire, Bhishma, father Dhritarastra and gurus Drona and Kripa all seem to be of same mind. Even our father has joined them." Duryodhana agreed with his brother and he walked out of the assembly hall full of rage.

Bhishma was very sorry for his grandson. His behaviour greatly upset the Kuru elder. He was full of anger as he spoke to Krishna, "O, Krishna now I see that the time has come. They have chosen death. They are not willing to listen to you? There cannot be any other result possible.

Krishna said, "All of you are responsible for such a situation. You all pampered Duryodhana too much. You never tried to check his faults. You should have put him in prison long ago. This would have done a lot of good to all. Even I killed my uncle Kamsa as he was sinner. A person should be abandoned for the sake of the family, a family should be abandoned for the sake of a village, the village should be abandon for the sake of a country. For the sake of one's soul the entire world should be forsaken. Only by abandoning Duryodhana and his friends can you save the Kshatriya race."

Hearing the angry words of Krishna, Dhritarastra asked Vidura to call Gandhari and Duryodhana to the court. He reasoned that perhaps Duryodhana could listen to his mother. Gandhari too asked that Duryodhana be called in the assembly hall. Gandhari was a very religious and perceptive woman. "Duryodhana has crossed all the limits of good conduct and behaviour, said the blind king." He is not willing to listen to anyone. Possibly, he may listen to you, said the king.

Gandhari said, "This land of Kurus cannot be ruled by someone full of greed. Duryodhana is full of greed. But your responsibility is not less for such state of affairs. By pampering your son beyond all reasons you have pushed him on the path of unrighteousness. You made him the king overruling my objections. Now it is too late. We shall have to atone for our sins."

Duryodhana entered the assembly hall. His eyes were still red with anger. Gandhari said to him, "My dear child listen to me carefully, I want to see you happy. It is not easy to be the ruler of the kingdom established by the Kurus. No one full of pride and greed can rule it. You shall have to raise yourself up to this task. You can conquer your enemies only when have mastered your senses and have controlled your mind. Treat your shortcomings as your enemies and conquer them. Son, come here to me. I am your mother and I am your foremost wellwisher. I love you too much. I could never think that my son would behave as you do. You are going to be the cause of a very great calamity. You should rectify your faults. Listen to your elders and your teachers. If you think you can defeat the Pandavas in war with the help of Bhishma, Drona, Kripa and Karna, there is no fool like you on the earth. Arjuna and Krishna are Nara and Narayana themselves. They are on the side of Dharma. No one in all the three worlds is capable of defeating them where is Krishna, there is victory, Listen to my words, leave your foolishness and live your life happily." Dhritarastra too tried to reason with his son, supporting the views of her wife. But Duryodhana remained unmoved. He was angry and he left the assembly hall without speaking.
