SHRI LAKSHMAN

Lakshman's anger in Sita's Swayamwar Lakshman even accompanied Rama when he had gone along with sage Vishwamitra to guard his oblations. There too, he served Lord Rama. At night, both the brothers used to press the feet of Vishwamitra and leave only by his permission. Even then, Lakshman used to press his brother's feet after that and go to rest only when Rama insisted him repeatedly.

Thus, by his mind, voice and actions, Lakshman was the true associate of Lord Rama. Lakshman knew very well that whatever relations he had in the world, he had them because of Lord Rama. Lakshman too had a kind and gentle nature. His nature became apparent on occasions when he saw someone dishonouring Rama. He never could see anyone dishonouring Rama and always took an angry appearance at such instances. Then he also did not discriminate between the people and scoffed at them without any regard. In Janakpur too, at the court of the king Janak, when no one could even move the bow 'Peenak' during Sita's 'Svayamvara', Janak spoke out in desperation: " I now understand that the earth is now free of powerful people. At these words, Lakshman felt as if Janak had ridiculed Rama's powers. So he got angry. He at once rose and moved towards Janak to show his prowess. Again when Lord Rama lifted the bow and began to break it, the bow broke with a loud noise. Very soon, Parshuram too arrived at the scene and began to reprimand Rama. Lakshman then could not tolerate Parshuram's ego. Lakshman had always regarded Rama as his Lord. Hence he not only answered Parshuram's egoistic queries but also derided at his challenges.

Such a supreme devotee like Lakshman, when came to know that at the instance of Kaikayee, their father had announced fourteen years of exile for Lord Rama, he became angry with both of them. But it was not possible for him to go against Rama's will. Every citizen of Ayodhya knew that once Rama decided to go on exile, Lakshman too would not stay put. Even Rama himself tried to convince Lakshman to stay in Ayodhya reminding him of his duties for his mothers and father, for the kingdom and for the subjects. But those convincing words had a negative effect on Lakshman. Getting anxious, he held the feet of Rama and said sobbingly: " O Lord, I do not know anybody like teacher, mother, father. Believe me, I am telling you the truth. You are everything for me. You should preach about religion and politics to only those who have some longing for salvation. But those who by their mind, voice and actions have respect for you need nothing else. Should such people be deserted?"

Thus deserting everything - the palace, parents, comforts, Lakshman went along with Rama to wander in the forests. Hence when Rama permitted him to accompany him in the forests, Lakshman felt as if he had received a great boon. Thus, when Lakshman was getting ready and donning bark costumes his mother Sumitra said to him:

RAGU ROSHU IRISHA MADU MOHU |
JANI SAPANE HU IN HAN KE BAE HOHU ||
SAKAL PRAKAR BIKAR BI HAI |
MAN- KRAM VACHAN KARE HUN SEWAKAI ||

Thus, Lakshman followed Rama in his exile with an absolute serving spirit. He had conquered his hunger, thirst, sleep, fatigue etc. and always remained alert. He also took care of not to step on the footmarks of Rama's feet. Fetching water, fruits, tubers, flowers and other worshipping items; erecting the hut at the proper place and keeping watch all through the night during winter, summer and rainy season were the duties that Lakshman discharged with fidelity and zeal. In Shringverpur, when Nishida Raja saw Rama sleeping on the ground and felt sorry, it was Lakshman who preached him about Tatvagyan (knowledge of philosophy or metaphysical knowledge) and the divine appearance of Lord Rama. During the period of exile Lord Rama himself preached Lakshman about knowledge, detachment, devotion etc.

During their exile, Lakshman strictly followed celibacy for fourteen long years. It was by the power of his continence that Lakshman was able to kill the great warrior Meghanaat. During their first meeting with Sugreev also, when Sugreev showed them the ornaments dropped by Sita, Lord Rama consulted Lakshman to identify them. But Lakshman replied: " Lord, I don't recognize these earrings and necklace. I have seen only the anklets, so I can recognize them only and nothing else." Such was the loyalty and continence of Lakshman.

On another occasion, when Marich, in the guise of a golden coloured deer, lured Rama their hut and Sita heard the cries of Rama, Sita insisted Lakshman to go and find out what the matter was. But when Lakshman refused to leave her alone, Sita began to doubt his intentions and accused him of having a leer for her. Thus compelled, Lakshman had to disobey Rama's orders and leave Sita alone amidst the forests. Again when Rama decided to offer prayers to the sea (Varuna) so that it would make way for him to reach Lanka, Lakshman did not like Rama's attitude. It was unbearable for him to see his omnipotent brother praying to Varuna.

Rama's words were supreme for Lakshman. At the behest of Rama, Lakshman was always ready to execute even the most difficult task. When Rama had decided to desert Sita, every one including Bharat and Shatrughana refused to execute the orders. For Lakshman also it was a grave situation. But, as it was the order of Rama whom Lakshman revered as his Lord, Lakshman agreed to follow the order. Such was the great submission of Lakshman towards Lord Rama.

One day, Shri Rama was having a dialogue with Kaal(the lord of Death). It was his order then that the intruder would be given the death sentence. So he appointed Lakshman to guard the gates. At the same time, meanwhile sage Durvasa also arrived there and began insisting to meet Rama at once. But when he felt that he was being delayed in his purpose, the sage threatened to destroy the whole clan by his curse. So Lakshman went inside the hut and informed Rama about Durvasa's arrival. Lord Rama welcomed and offered his respects to Durvasa. But when Durvasa turned his back and began to leave the hut, Rama grew sad. As per the resolution, Lakshman was given the death sentence. Lakshman knew it well, so in order to save his brother from embarrassment and sorrow, Lakshman himself demanded the death sentence for him and accepted the separation from his Lord. Thus, Lakshman served his Lord Shri Rama life long and accepted a separation from him at last.
