Confusion among Kauravas
The news that the Pandavas were alive and now they were friends to a powerful king Drupada's reached Hastinapura. Duryodhana, Shakuni and other Kauravas were very upset. How the Pandavas could come alive of the house of Lac was most inexplicable thing to them. Shakuni suggested that, they should attack the Pandavas while they were at Drupada's palace. A great fight took place but the Kauravas were vanquished and repelled. Duryodhana came back to Hastinapura quite dejected.
Vidura was very annoyed to learn about the latest misadventure of the Kauravas. He went to Dhritarastra and told him that the Pandavas came out unhurt from the house of lac and they were well and alive. Also they had married Draupadi, the daughter of powerful king Drupada. He suggested to Dhritarastra that he should welcome back the Pandavas and restore the crown to prince Yudhisthira. These will wipeout the infancy attached to his name, as the people were suspicious that the conspiracy to burn the Pandavas alive at Varnavata was hatched with his knowledge, if not with his consent.
While Vidura was advicing to the blind king, Duryodhana and Karna rushed in. Duryodhana was very upset and told his father that the Pandavas should not be allowed back to Hastinapura. He told about various crooked plans and schemes being made by Shakuni and his counsellors to cause rift among the Pandavas and to bribe Draupada and to involved Draupadi to set one brother against the other. Karna was not at all in favour of such schemes and plots. He thought these to be of low kind and unworthy of a Kshatriya warrior like Duryodhana. Instead he was in favour of one more attack on the Pandavas on a much bigger scale to decide the question once and for all. He advocated "danda-niti" the policy of chastisement. He was not in favour of Sama (conselling), dama (bribing), bheda (causing rift) policies. He was very confident of him leading the Kauravas to victory over the Pandavas. To take stock of this news development of the Pandavas survival an assembly was to take place to be attended by all the Kauravas elders, like Bhishma, Drona and Kripa etc.
In the assembly hall Bhishma had a just and peaceful solution. He wanted that the Pandavas be given their due share in the kingdom and the dharma dictated that half the kingdom should be given to the Pandavas. Drona also endorsed the Bhishma proposals. He said as the elder and as the king it was the duty of Dhritarastra to see that no injustice is done to the sons of his younger brother Pandu, now left to his case. Karna was of the view that the true dharma of Kshatriyas dictated that all the questions be decided on the battlefield. The victorious to rule the world the vanquished to die. He was in favour of a decisive war. Vidura analysed all the options and suggested that the war shall be ruinous to all. Nobody will benefit by the war. He to solve this tangle favoured advice of Bhishma. Dhritarastra also agreed with them. He said that the Pandavas and their bride should be welcomed back to Hastinapura and they should get their due share in the running of the kingdom. Vidura was chosen by him to carry his message to the Pandavas with suitable gifts and presents for them and for their bride.
Vidura went to Panchala and Drupada received him with due honour and ceremony. Vidura was overwhelmed to see the Pandavas and Kunti again. He offered all the costly gifts to the Pandavas to their bride, to Drupada and all on behalf of Dhritarastra. The great happiness on their survival, for their marriage etc. Dhritarastra had invited all of them to Hastinapura to live there once again.
As Krishna and Balarama were also visiting Drupada's court at that time, taking their permission. Yudhisthira with his mother, brother and Draupadi started for Hastinapura. There they were received with all cordiality and Dhritarastra gave many gifts to them. Draupadi was specially honoured with lavish gifts by all, Gandhari, the mother of Duryodhana was really happy to see all the Pandavas back home. A lavish function was formally arranged for the Pandavas in the great assembly hall of the palace.
The Pandavas went there with Krishna. Dhritarastra after welcoming them , finally said, "You are the sons of Pandu, who was my brother. As such you should get half the kingdom to rule in all fairness. Therefore it has been my wish that you take the part of kingdom where our ancestors established this Kuru dynasty. That area is called Khandava Prastha. It has been capital of our great ancestors like Nahusha. Yayati and Puruvasa. I want to see Yudhisthira as a crowned king. Whatever happened in the past should be forgotten. May you obtain glory of our ancestors." Yudhisthira, even obedient to the elders accepted the kings offer in all humility and with a sense of gratitude. Though the area given to Yudhisthira and the Pandavas was now no more than ruinous waste yet Bhishma, Drona, Kripa and Vidura were happy that the enmity between the cousins will come to an end. They granted their consent to the proposal. It was with great pomp and show that the coronation of Yudhisthira was done. It was done in ceremonies lasting for days. All presided over by Sage Vyasa. Vyasa gave his blessing to Yudhisthira that his fame would spread far and with, people under his rule should become prosperous and happy. Dhritarastra suggested that now crowned a king Yudhisthira at the earliest. Yudhisthira ever obliging by nature started for Khandavaprastha in the company of Krishna. After seeing the ruins and wastes all around, Krishna summoned Indra, the king of the god and commanded him to take care of the Khandavaprastha and make it prosperous as it would be hence forth called Indraprastha.
Indra was only too willing to oblige. He commanded, Vishvakarma, the architects to the god to make the Khandavaprastha a suitable capital for an emperor soon. Vishvakarma made Indraprastha as the most beautiful capital city in the world. People used to see it from far off places and being impressed by its grandeur and beauty settled down there for good.
After a few days, Krishna asked Yudhisthira's permission to return to his kingdom Dwarka, as he had been away for quite some time. Yudhisthira was too overwhelmed with gratitude to say anything. Krishna assumed that he would be available to the Pandavas always, whenever he was needed. Then Krishna left for Dwarka after taking a fond farewell from all.
