KIRATA AND ARJUNA
Now the Pandavas again returned to Kamyaka forest. From there, Arjuna left for Himalayas to do tapas to please Lord Shiva. On a lonely hill called Irdralika, Arjuna sat down to do the penance. After sometime an ascetic came there and he did not like Arjuna's warrior like dress and his weapons. After a heated arguments it was revealed that the visitor was Indra himself. When he knew about Arjuna's intent he became happy and went way. Arjuna did very rigorous penance and lord Shiva was pleased with him.
He (Shiva) along with goddess Parvati came there posing as a Kirata (hunter). Arjuna was attacked by a wild boar.
Arjuna shot it by an arrow. At the same time, Kirata also shot the boar. The boar, which was a rakshas lay dead. There was exchange of hot words between Arjuna and Kirata and soon a full blown bloody, duel was in progress. Arjuna tried all possible weapons and manouvers but he could not subdue the Kirata. He was very much perplexed. Even Indra could not face him, who was this Kirata then? He made a Shivalinga and started worshipping the lord of lords, Mahadeva. Arjuna put a garland of flowers on the idol and to his surprise it went on Kirata's neck. Now realizing his folly, Arjuna prostrated himself at the feet of Shankara, who had a very sweet smile on his lips. He took Arjuna by hand and showed him his divine form. Arjuna was over whelmed with a joy and he told lord Shiva about his desire for divine Pashupata astra.Shiva gave him the astra, and blessed him.Blessed by Shiva and his consort Parvati, Arjuna stood there amazed. The entire mountain was glowing with a divine aura.
OTHER DIVINE ASTRAS
Arjuna stood there filled with deep sense of joy after meeting Lord Shiva in person. All of a sudden the whole mountain became luminous with various gods started to descend. All the gods started coming to Indralika Mountain. Yama, the god of death, Kubera the lord of riches. Varuna, the lord of seas and Indra the lord king of devas, were first to come.
Yama gave his divine astra to Arjuna and said, "You have proved yourself worthy of this astra. Lord Shiva has granted you an audience in person. This astra will be of great help in the forth coming war. Since you are righteous, You shall be victorious." Then Lord Varuna gave his Varunastra to Arjuna seeing that he was a great warrior and the astra shall be of great help to him during the war. Similarly, Arjuna was granted astra by Kubera also. Kubera said that he was very pleased with Arjuna and since Krishna himself would be on his side no one in all the world could defeat him. Kubera also said that he was the lord of riches in all the worlds. Arjuna would win great wealth in his life. Indra embraced his son and said, "I will give you all divine astras. I have some work cut out for you. You should come to my city." After this all the gods departed. After sometime the divine chariot of Indra came and his charioteer, Matali requested Arjuna to sit in the Chariot to go to Indraloka. Arjuna taking leave of all, ascended the chariot and reached heavens in his life, an honour given to only those who performs Rajasuya and Ashvamedha Yagyas.
